This KV Meetup will focus on CAT'S CRADLE(1963)
Suggestions:
Select a favorite passage to read to us.
Check out the Message Board, too, to begin discussion even now.
This novel established Vonnegut as a writer in America.
It also created a stir at The University of Chicago: the book landed him his delayed master's degree in Anthropology. (THINK OF THAT!)
Each inventor of the atom bomb is visited on the very day that their creation is dropped on Hiroshima. Later, we visit one of Vonnegut's "worlds" on a Caribbean Island inhabited by descendents of the inventors-- a specially invented cult with a specially invented vocabulary! This novel is coincidentally serious, sad, hilarious, uniquely-fashioned, and stylistically prototypical of novels to come, especially Slaughterhouse-Five (1969). (GOOD FOR HIM!)
British novelist Graham Greene called Cat's Cradle "one of the three best novels of the year by one of the most able living writers."
We usually begin our meetup by sharing our impressions of him.
How do his life and works touch us?
What endears KV to us?
How did he write?
Does his writing relate to our experiences, or profession, thoughts/beliefs, our view of our country/world?
We also elicit your comments & wishes for our MeetUps. "In the air" are already several suggestions for interesting future events--let's make plans!!
In our discussions, we are bound to hit on controversial subjects he tackles. We can agree, or agree to disagree about the subjects and even the various ways KV goes about approaching the important messages (and setting the reader up to understand them).
We are looking forward to seeing new members and invited guests on Sat., Feb. 9.
PLEASE RSVP YES, NO, or MAYBE.
